Safe sexting
It is possible to state, even at the moment when the recordings or photos are actually made, who they are intended for and what will happen to them afterwards or, for example, in the event of separation. This may seem somewhat exaggerated at the time the pictures are being taken, but it will help protect you against any unpleasant surprises later on.
If you think you might be uncomfortable with the recordings or pictures afterwards, you don't have to agree to them. Clearly express your point of view and stress that you are aware of the rights you hold over your image.
Only send your picture if you feel safe. Take your time with sending any pictures, they can still be sent the next day. When taking pictures, you can make sure your face is not visible, and that you cannot be recognised by other features (e.g. tattoos).
Self-destructing messages
You can also protect yourself by using the self-destructing function of message systems. Many messaging apps offer the option of automatically deleting images and videos after they have been viewed once. This function often also prevents screenshots from being taken, ensuring control of your private recordings and pictures remains firmly in your hands, while minimising the risk of unwanted distribution.
However, not all messaging services protect users against screenshots of self-destructing messages being taken. Acquaint yourself with the functions of apps and services to find out whether screenshots are possible.

Deepfakes: No protection possible
Some apps and computer programs make it very easy to alter a photo or video. This makes it possible to turn a normal photo into a nude photo, or to edit another person's face into a porn film. This means that any person can be affected by image-based sexualised violence – a harmless photo on the internet or a culprit’s mobile phone can be enough.
The only way to safeguard yourself completely would be to ensure that no photos of you exist, but no one can demand that of you. Women and girls have a right to be visible on the internet without being subject to forms of violence.
