What can I do?

Identity theft or identity misuse can have serious consequences. Creating accounts in the name of someone else in order to harm or hurt them is illegal, and can even lead to consequences under criminal law. If your online identity has been stolen or your account hacked, you can defend yourself against it.

The most important thing is to back up and document the content, e.g. by taking a screenshot, so that you record the date and time. You can find out more about documentation in the "How do I document?" section.

Stolen online accounts

Change the passwords of the accounts concerned, or report the account to those responsible for the platform, and ask them to delete or deactivate the account.

If accounts have been created in online shops under your name, inform the shops, and ask them to delete the account that was falsely set up under your name.

Stolen bank data

If, for example, your credit card or other means of accessing your bank account is being misused, inform your bank without delay and have the access blocked if necessary. Also bear online payment services, such as PayPal, in mind.

Setting up two-factor authentication

You can secure your accounts with a second factor so that nobody can access them in the future. Instructions are available here..
